okay, nope. previous problem should be fixed…but have a new one:

Ive realised it’s all about pages for me in word press. No posts. Thats for blogging.

So I have figured out how to make a page my front page. Now I am stuck as to make another page…appear under a category…i.e. A page that has my ‘Contact Us’ details on it to appear under the Contact Us category/nav.

Going to bed now. Start a new job tomorrow! I haven’t woken up this early in earsssss

Word Press – love and hate

I’m happy with my decision to use word press. Has made life a whole lot easier and now that I can see how it works, I can definitely see how this is perfect for my site. My site is almost an interactive magazine…photo galleries, upcoming events, articles and reviews with 4 sub categories, competitions, etc… it will become content heavy and need constant updating. I also wanted to capture a database..and wordpress has it all. If WordPress is going to make life easier and still achieve everything I want to – then way to go.

Am going to make this clear now. I chose PHP, XHTML, CSS, My SQL as my learning objectives. I chose these based on what I knew I wanted my site to do. My objective is not to become a developer but more on the lines of a project manager. I wanted to be able to get a fair understanding of what technology is used for what, how long it took to build certain things, and to be able to do a little myself. I feel I am on the way to meeting my objectives Even with CMS, I have still used CSS and XHTML already, I am going to see how to build my competition form now…

My issues right now is where the ‘hate’ part of my post comes from. I can’t figure out how to get rid of posts from my main page. So I want to be able to post something under my Contact Us page..without that appearing on the homepage as well. And I can’t figure out how to show a sub category without showing the main category. Has anyone use wordpress as a CMS before? can anyone help?:)

….okay so now I really do hope wordpress doesn’t let me down…and does all the things I want it too.

Where I am at..

I have been constantly badgering a friend of mine for all sorts of advice and problem shooting. Thankyou friend. So far I know I am very behind and a little scared as we have to PRESENT in less than a week.

So I have basically finished creating my design. I have complete my homepage using CSS, HTML and Photoshop. I found my template on: glish.com. I modified a 3 column layout…I found it tricky to make background of wrapper to be stretched in height by the floating columns. So with the advice of my friend, I put another container around the 3 floated columns and give it a float left and a background colour.

Feeling happy with my homepage. I especially like my nav. It has a hover over function and a background colour.

I am now looking at using wordpress to get me through the rest. I have spoken to Tim about this and whilst this may move away from my learning objectives in terms of understanding each technology fully…I feel a little limited by time and also feel I can get the surface level knowledge I seek. I don’t think web development is my goal, however i always wanted to have a decent understanding of it so it may help me scope out projects as a Project Manager. I feel I am achieving this.

well, feel a lot clearer after doing the system plan. It seemed to have helped me map things out properly, put things in an order and sort out exactly what info I will include and what I don’t need. I even included a little css in the actual build of this assignment. Feeling more motivated to make this a real project with real purposes. Have shown some friends, to sort content out and has been great feedback. Have fallen behind in terms of my original schedule, and had to make a new one. It seems like I will have to learn alot quickly but if I stick to a few tricks, it can save alot of time. In terms of how this subject has been helping me in the workplace in brainstorm sessions – alot. I know now what technology can be used for what. It has also helped me understand my other subject better. Not there yet! Slowly but surely…

Week 6

Have been working on the Micro and Macro assignment..have found some great books that help not only for this assignment, but to actualy learn the technologies in the library. My reference list is in the assignment: http://students.mim.iml.uts.edu.au/users/10517504/Macro_Micro_Analysis.html. Although I had included Java script as a technology in my learning proposal. I have realised I don’t need it and do not want to include it in the macro and micro assignment. At first I was going to include it and state why I don’t want to use it, but the more I went into it..the more annoyed I got with the little relevance it had to and so I didn’t put it in.

week 5 reflection

getting more into web development side of things. The pracs help. Now I know a bit of xhtml from learning proposal…other coding is making more sense. Its all about PHP these days huh. Plan for this week is to dive into it as I’m all about using databases and its a main goal of mine.

Week 4 Reflection

Deary me. I certainly have blogging to catch up on. Unfortunately didn’t make it to week 4 class due to this wonderful flu that sticks around for 4 weeks. I did however complete the readings and do the PHP practical from home. From previous work experience I know PHP is crucial for database management and is something I know I want to learn for this project and in general. I have included it in my learning plan. The learning plan…the draft I did in Smultron. The final I did in Dreamweaver. I have never used Dreamweaver before – and found it helpful in terms of learning how to set out the tags and what they all mean. I know that it is recommended we don’t use Dreamweaver, however – I am surprised at what I have learnt from it if I were to go away now and type xhtml in just a notepad – I feel a lot more confident. And the validation tool is great!

Week 2 Reflection

Okay I found myself walking into class telling myself, you can do it – you can do it. Just listen to everything! So I did. And whilst I felt the animation video helped a lot, really I’m just looking forward to proving to myself that I can understand everything and do it. Have been thinking about the projects and the learning proposal. Whilst I want to use this for an actual future personal/business project. I don’t want to overload it with too many ideas I may not have the time or capability for. Still brainstorming.
